LAS, WALTER: February 24, 1933 – January 25, 2011. At McNally House on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, Walter Las of Smithville at the age of 77. Dearly loved husband of Hazel (Bryant) for 35 years and proud and loving father of Bryan (Kyla), David (Megan) and John (Jackie). Loving grandfather of 3 grandchildren – Kate, Sarah and John – who will miss their grandpa. Walter was also awaiting the arrival of a fourth grandchild. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Katherine Las, and his brothers Joseph Jr. and Stanley. Walter was born in Timmins and moved to Smithville in 1939. He was a teacher at Port Colborne High School and at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in St. Catharines. For about 20 years, he operated a beef farm at the same time, to which he retired after teaching 32 years. Friends may call at Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Thursday, January 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 216 Station Street, Smithville on Friday, January 28 at 11 am. Interment St. Martin of Tours Cemetery will follow. If desired, memorial contributions to McNally House, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, or St. Luke’s Anglican Church would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home
