VAN DER VELDE, JAN (JOHN): Peacefully, at his home and surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 3, 2009, John Van Der Velde of Smithville in his 67th year. Born in the Netherlands, John was the beloved husband of Leona Van Der Velde (nee Franz) for 41 years. Loving father of Mike and his wife Jacquelin Van Der Velde, and of Bonnie Van Der Velde. Very precious grandfather of Natalie. Survived by brothers and sisters Dianne DeBoer, Henry (Ellen), Irene (John) Schutten, Joanne (Henry) Kiers, Betsy (Harry) Porter, Ricki (Jerry) Blokker, Fred (Evelyn), Arthur (Jeanie), and Hennie (Andrew) Vos. Predeceased by parents Fennigien and Fredrik Van Der Velde, and in-laws Harry Brouwer, Mike DeBoer, Victor Franz, Larry Andress and Diane Franz. Also survived by in-laws Bertha Andress, Dave Franz, Ernie Franz, Dennis (Beatriz) Francz and Nancy Franz. Friends may call at the Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Tuesday, October 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 7 at 11 am at the Smithville United Church, 116 West Street (Regional Road 20), Smithville. Cremation will follow with later inurnment at Union Cemetery, Smithville. If desired, memorial contributions to the West Niagara Palliative Care Team would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.
