Peacefully at Albright Manor on August 16, 2024 in his 91st year, Frank Vajda passed away. Survived by his wife of 49 years Gale Vajda, and by his children Chris (Sherly) and Zoltan “John” (Holly). He will be missed by his grandchildren Emily, Anissa, Zoli, Madelyn, and Tyler. Frank is predeceased by his brother Janos. He will be remembered by many other family and friends in Hungary and in Canada.
Born in a small town in Transylvania, Frank settled in Canada after being forced to flee Hungary after taking part in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution against Soviet rule. He worked as a tool and die maker and retired from Ball Packaging after a long career. He was an active member of the Hungarian community in Hamilton, having been the President of the Hungarian Social Club, a member of the John Calvin Presbyterian Hungarian Church, and took part in many other picnics, festivals and churches around the area. Frank was also a member of Hillcrest Masonic Lodge #594 in Hamilton for many years. He loved cooking, dancing, playing cards and spending time with family.
A visitation will be held Thursday, August 22, at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, August 23, at 11:00 a.m. If desired, memorial donations would be appreciated by the family to Alzheimer’s Canada and can be made through the funeral home.
